Deciphering Express Entry
Express Entry is Canada’s pioneering online system designed to process and oversee applications from skilled workers aspiring to attain permanent residency in the country. This system encompasses three core programs:
- Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)
- Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
- Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)
Upon establishing an online profile, the Canadian government evaluates candidates for eligibility under one of these programs. Those meeting the criteria are placed into the Express Entry pool. Within this pool, candidates undergo evaluation and ranking based on the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS), a metrics-driven system that considers factors such as age, education, work experience, language proficiency, and other pertinent determinants.
Periodically, the Canadian government selects the most exceptional candidates, typically those with the highest CRS scores, and extends Invitations to Apply (ITAs) for permanent residency. Furthermore, there are specific categories where candidates may secure ITAs based on distinct category-related criteria.

The Express Entry framework comprises two primary phases. The initial phase involves eligible candidates expressing their interest in obtaining Canadian permanent residency. The subsequent phase involves rounds of invitations, commonly referred to as “draws”, in which the Canadian government handpicks candidates with the most outstanding immigration profiles.
Express Entry draws come in three distinct forms:
General Rounds of Invitation
In these draws, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) extends invitations to candidates with the highest CRS scores, inviting them to proceed with their applications for permanent residency.
Program-Specific Rounds of Invitation
This mode sees IRCC targeting candidates who not only possess commendable CRS scores but also align with the criteria of a specific Express Entry-managed program.
Category-Based Rounds of Invitation
In these draws, IRCC seeks candidates who, in addition to having high CRS scores, fit into specific categories devised by the IRCC. These categories are often created to advance particular economic objectives and agendas.
