Overview

Post-Graduation Work Permits (PGWP)

Unlock the opportunity to work in Canada after completing your studies! The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) is designed for international students who've completed an accredited post-secondary program in Canada. This permit not only offers flexibility in employment but can also serve as a pathway to permanent residency.

Why Consider a PGWP?
As a hub for international students, Canada recognizes the immense potential and talent that graduates bring. The PGWP is Canada’s commitment to ensuring that international students have the chance to gain professional experience in the country.

  • Flexibility: The PGWP is an open work permit, enabling you to work for any employer across Canada without a prior job offer.
  • Duration: Depending on your educational program's length in Canada, the PGWP can be valid for up to three years.
  • A Stepping Stone: The professional experience gained under PGWP can be instrumental when applying for Canadian permanent residence. In fact, many immigration pathways favor candidates with Canadian study and work experience.

Understanding PGWP’s Potential for Permanent Residency
Most of Canada’s numerous immigration programs value local experience. Typically, securing a year of professional work under a National Occupational Classification (NOC) code of 0, A, or B can pave the way for eligibility in various permanent residency programs.

Distance Learning and PGWP

Considering the challenges posed by the global pandemic, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has adapted its policies to support international students.

  • Online Learning & PGWP: If you’re enrolled at a Canadian Designated Learning Institution (DLI) and pursuing distance learning, you remain eligible for PGWP, provided all other criteria are met.
  • Key Dates: Students who’ve applied for a study permit on or before August 31, 2022, can complete their entire program online without compromising PGWP eligibility. However, any study period from abroad beginning September 1, 2023, will influence the PGWP’s length, regardless of the study’s start date.
