Overview

Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP)

In the expansive Canadian landscape, each province and territory carry its unique charm and opportunities. Thanks to Canada’s Constitutional framework, the nation’s immigration system is jointly managed by the federal government and individual provinces and territories. This shared responsibility has given birth to the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP).

The PNP facilitates provinces and territories in nominating individuals who aspire to immigrate to Canada and have a keen interest in residing in a specific province. The only territories exempted from the PNP are Nunavut and the province of Quebec, which has its own set of criteria for economic immigration.

Established in 1998, the PNP has substantially diversified the geographical distribution of immigrants across Canada. Today, provinces beyond the major hubs of Ontario, Quebec, and British Columbia have witnessed a surge in immigration, attributing much of their success to the PNP.

While each PNP is uniquely tailored to the province’s needs, they all offer pathways aligned with the federal Express Entry system. These ‘enhanced nominations’ have transformed the immigration process by significantly speeding it up and making it more efficient. Another avenue for permanent residence via the PNP is the ‘base’ stream.
